Brighouse 3rd Age Group - A History
Since 1990 the young- at- heart members of the
Brighouse 3rd Age Group
have shared a passion for lifelong learning.
At a time of public spending cutbacks, they have no fears that their range of activities is going to be curtailed – as they have been almost entirely self-funded since the day the group was formed, with help from the occasional grant.
The late Katharine Walsh, who was chairman and one of the founder members of the organisation, was particularly proud that the group, which runs the activities for the over 50’s throughout the week from September to April, caters for its members with a wide range of activities where they can learn new skills and take up new hobbies.
Mrs Walsh said, “Whilst we enjoy the activities and what they offer, it is the opportunity of meeting people, making new friends, and the social aspect which is so important and appeals to the majority of our members. The activities
are part of their weekly routine and even when the weather is inclement, there is a determination to get to the centre where nearly all of the activities are held under one roof."
In addition to the weekly activities, a 3rd Age Forum is held every month throughout the year with a range of guest speakers, organised outings, a luncheon club and walking groups. Once a year, in April, the group holds an exhibition
and display, showcasing members` work and skills.
Brighouse 3rd Age Group currently stands at a healthy 423 (year 2017/2018) members and extends a warm welcome to everyone. The group looks forward to an educational, interesting and
a Happy New Year.
