Hi Walkers,
This Thursday coming (18th) is walking day and will be led by Pat and Tony Priestly.
Pats excellent email to me says it all :-
'The walk will start from Haworth. We suggest parking at The Bronte Museum car park, West Lane which is on the left as you leave Haworth at the top end, parking £4 for 4 hours or over. There is a car park on the left before this but drive past that one as it is more expensive. The walk will take a route out to Bronte Falls where weather permitting we will have a coffee stop. The route down to the falls is quite rocky and potentially wet so walking poles helpful if you have them.
We will then climb up the other side of the falls(a steep but short climb) and head towards Stanbury. When we were there on Wednesday in heavy rain and cold temperatures we went into the Stanbury Arms to get a coffee and to see if they served food. They don’t but the landlady kindly said that we were very welcome to take our own food and eat in the pub. We thought that a very generous offer and so have made the executive decision to do just that, so please bring a packed lunch. Obviously we will be expected to buy a drink at the pub but that’s not such a hardship.
The route is about 4.5 miles long.
Cheers Pat & Tony'
We meet as usual, 10.30,, on Albion St.
Thanks Bill.

Thursday 21st March 2024 walk from the Toby Carvery.
We started and finished this walk from The Toby Carvery at Ainley Top. Making our way along the main road into Rastrick, we crossed over at The Sun Inn and then made our way past the 'new' Fire Station and Round Hill, under the M62, then crossing opposite the Four Sons to go up a footpath, via a building site into Fixby. we then went past the entrance to the Golf club, over the 'Ford' in the valley into Cowcliffe. At one point there were some fine views over Huddersfield.
We then crossed the Huddersfield Golf Course and made our way back to the Carvery to enjoy a well earned lunch there.
Thank to Chris Stewart for leading this walk
Walk Thursday 15th February
Yesterdays walk started and ended at The Beach Pub at Hollingworth Lake, on a grey overcast day but fine for the most part.
25 members travelled over to the Reservoir, unfortunately we were late in starting, but the walk was enjoyable (I hope), a number decided to just take the circular Lake walk, due to the late start, 13 members continued onto a short section of the Rochdale Canal between Littleborough and Smithy Bridge.
A lovely meal was enjoyed at the Beach Pub

Thursdays walk, on the 16th November 2023, started (and ended), at the Hickory's Smokehouse Bradley, and was organised and led by Bill Robertson.
We walked through the local woodland, muddy underfoot as you would expect after the recent downpours ....., we were pleasantly surprised by how much Autumn colour had survived the wind and rain .......
We crossed the M62 twice, walking to the top of Toothill Bank and passed the Bradley Scout Camp and then across the Bradley Park Golf Course, back to Hickorys were a number of us enjoyed a meal there.
The rain stayed away and we enjoyed this lovely walk in the Autumn woodland. Thanks again to Bill for leading.

The September walk on the 21st was enjoyed by 15 members, bearing in mind the terrible recent weather (wet and windy) we were very lucky to have a bright and sunny day.
We started from the Moorcock Inn at Norland, climbing onto the Moor, which gave us lovely views up and down the Ryburn Valley, from Ripponden to Sowerby Bridge. We walked about 5.5 miles around the area, taking our picnic lunch next to the Ryburn Golf course.
Many thanks to Bill Roberson for organising and leading this lovely walk in beautiful surroundings.

Our August walk on the 17th, was led by Mike Halliwell, 30 members took part on what was a decent day on the whole, with the sun making an appearance later on the walk....
We started from Albion Street, went along Halifax Road to Slead Syke, then down Mill Hill Lane into the Red Beck Valley. Taking the footpath up to Southowram, turning right up Brookfoot Lane to Marshalls, then taking the path down into Freemans Wood and down to Manor House Farm at Cromwell Bottom. We then took the footpath up through the woods to Southowram and had our picnic lunch in the little cemetery near the Church.
From St. Annes-in-the-Grove Church we then made our way back into the Red Beck Valley arriving at Sunny Vale, then up into Hove Edge, to keep off the main road we went into the woods behind the W.M. Club, which came out on Clog Sole Road. The majority made their way back to Albion Street. The walk was around 5/5.5 miles long.
Our July walk this Thursday the 20th was around the Shibden Valley. We started at the top car park, crossing over Godley Lane and walking down into Stump Cross. We then turned up Staups Lane and joined Kell Lane, there we took the footpath across the fields along the valley side to Simm Carr Lane, we took a footpath up the hillside (a bit muddy after recent rain) and had our lunch in an old Quarry. Restarting, we went through a stone built 'tunnel' (made by the Quarrymen ?) and came out on top of the valley. Making our way back into the valley coming out at the Shibden Mill Inn, although tempted to call in for refreshments, we walked on past and made our way towards Stump Cross and coming back to cross Godley Lane once more.
Many thanks to Helen and Paul Somerville for leading this scenic walk around Shibden and for choosing such lovely weather !!

Our June walk on Thursday the 15th was switched from a Moorland one to a woodland one, due the forecast heat, a great call as it was much cooler in the woods.
15 members took part this month, starting at Shelf park we made our way past farmland and farm buildings into Norwood Green. From there we made our way into Judy Woods and the cooler conditions. We had our picnic lunch at the Bridge over the stream before continuing through Judy Woods and then into Shelf Woods, returning back to the starting point at the park.

This months walk, last Thursday the 16th March 2023, was a circular one from Oxenhope, following a route called the Railway Children Walk.
19 members took part, using a long and short route - split roughly 50/50. Starting near the Railway station at Oxenhope, we crossed over the tracks just past the station and climbed up the hill, past the 3 Chimneys House used in the shooting of the film. Following a quick look inside the church we split into 2 groups, 1 spent and hour or so in Haworth the rest did a circular route via Oakworth back to Haworth then returned to Oxenhope using the route next to the railway.

35 members took part on the February walk (Thursday the 16th) at Hollingworth Lake led by Mike Halliwell.
We left Brighouse in bright (ish) sunshine, but as we approached Ripponden it was clear it was going to be different in Lancashire. The low cloud/fog was quite dense over the 'tops' and only clearing slightly in Littleborough, with a steady drizzle.....
We set off from The Beach P.H. walking down the hill to Smithy Bridge, we then took to the towpath alongside the Rochdale canal to Littleborough. At the lock in Littleborough we left the canal to walk up through the Country parkland below Hollingworth Lake, due to overnight rain the paths were a lot muddier than the previous week when I checked out the route.
When we got up to the edge of the Reservoir a number took the short route back to the pub for lunch, the rest of us completed our circuit of the 'Lake' in a steady drizzle.
We all then enjoyed our lunch in The Beach P.H. before returning to a dry West Yorkshire.
20 members took part on our January walk on Thursday the 19th, starting and ending at the Armitage Arms at Clifton.
We set off, on a lovely winters day in bright sunlight onto Highmoor Lane, before crossing the road and passing through a Farm yard, over the farmland and on onto Thornhills lane, with lovely views over Brighouse and the Calder Valley. We then walked down onto the old Railway Branch line above Welholme Park to Thornhill Beck Lane.
Walking up Thornhill Beck Lane and Jay House Lane, we made our way onto the Willow Valley Golf course (passing Hartshead Moor Services - M62), crossing the golf course using the designated paths - some icy and some muddy - finishing at the Armitage Arms were the majority of us enjoyed our lunch there.
Many thanks to Helen and Paul for plotting and leading this walk.
Thursday 15th December 2022 - our Christmas walk.
We set off from the High Park Pub and Grill and crossed over the Bradley Park Golf course, where a few hardy souls were knocking a little white ball around ... Leaving the Golf course we worked our way back round to Bradley Road, crossing it and following a path down towards the woods, through which we made our way back to the pub for our Christmas dinner.
Many thanks to Billy for arranging this walk (hope you are feeling much better ?) and to Pat for organising the food orders and deposits.
Wishing everyone in the Group a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and prosperous 2023

Hi Walkers'
Once again we've been very lucky with the weather. Seven walkers enjoyed a pleasant walk, on the 26th, around Honley and Brockholes. Ending up at a farm with a field of Alpacas and a couple of Donkeys all clearly used to having their photographs taken.
Cheers Bill.

Hi Walkers,

I'm preparing details of a new walk for this Wednesday probably later today.
Cheers Bill. My mobile.07913 670054.

Twelve of us turned up for the first walk of the summer on Wednesday 29th July. A mainly sunny day with a cool wind over the moor. . Perhaps too long for the first walk. Mainly because I got confused at the end and we
walked further than planned.

14 hardy souls took part in February's walk around a wet and wind swept Hollingworth Lake. We had a stop in the café along the way for a warming-up cup of coffee.
The conditions weren't improving so the walk was cut short by missing out the area through the country park and completing the full circuit of the Lake.
A nice meal and drink was then enjoyed by all at the Beech Hotel before the sun came
out as we returned home!
Mike Halliwell and Peter Edwards were thanked for organizing the walk.

The first walk of 2020 on Thursday 16th January, was approximately 4 miles and led by Bill Robertson.
We started at the Stump Cross Inn at the bottom of Godley Bank with 29 members taking part. We set off up Shibden Old road before cutting across a very muddy field and crossing the road down to the Shibden Mill Inn.
We followed the signs to Dam Head where at The Dicken we turned up a narrow steep path, past a young
man with a large section of dry stone wall to build,
and then on to the top of Whiskers Lane.
We carried on up Cave Hill and then turned up Paddock Road before a downward move past Lower Lime House and Simm Carr lane and through the Shibden Mill Inn car park back to the Stump Cross Inn.
Lunch came very efficiently and was well
received by everyone in a busy inn.
Thanks to Bill for a good walk which was well led .
We look forward to the next one on February 20th at Hollingworth Lake.

Even though the forecast was not good we managed to complete the Christmas walk in just about dry overhead conditions, the rain starting as we went inside
the Golf club.
A small number of members started from Albion street and walked along Halifax road to Slead Syke then into the Walterclough valley on Wood Bottom Lane and continued along there past Sunny Vale Gardens, before turning up into the woods before we came to Badger Lane.
We eventually came out onto Halifax road again near Crosslee then made our way into Hove Edge to the Crow Nest Park Golf Club, meeting up with other members, for a lovely Christmas dinner.
Thanks to Brian for arranging the walk and Lunch

We then passed a C of E Church and Helme Primary Academy with Helme Hall care home on our right as we came to Helme Lane. A short walk on there and we went up Harrison Lane, past the Two Hoots Barn and on a path that led us out at the other end of the reservoir where we did a small skirmish down one side of the reservoir.
We returned to our cars for the short trip down to the Sands House Hotel for an enjoyable lunch.
Our thanks to Craig Weston for organizing
a delightful walk.

The Brighouse 3rd age October walk was led by Bill Robertson around Hebden Bridge. Thirty members took part as we started from the Stubbings Wharf pub, crossing over and after a short walk up Saville Road we walked through a wood, slightly muddy with all the recent rain, coming out at Charlestown.
We continued up with a fine view of Studley Pike on the hillside at the opposite side of the valley. We passed the 2447 Calder Valley Air Trading Corp headquarters before going up Stoney Lane and passing the sign for the Wainwright route on the Pennine way before making our way back to the Stubbings Wharf for lunch.
A big thanks to Bill for organising the walk.
The September walk organised by Paul Somerville, Richard Rodziewicz, Mark Wisniewski and their partners started outside the Just Scrumptious Coffee and Tea House on the A672 Oldham Road with 25 members taking part including 1 new member.
The walk moved across the road up Bar Lane past the Paper Mill House and a long climb up to Ryburn reservoir before we crossed the bridge over the Ryburn and climbed again until we reached a spot for our
last picnic of the year.
A further climb took us to the bridge over Baitings reservoir before we went down the left hand side of the track leading down to the Ryburn before crossing again and taking the right hand side down
to meet Bar Lane.
A lovely walk in beautiful weather and glorious scenery and many thanks to our team of organisers.

The August walk organised by Pat and Tony Priestley took place at Hardcastle Crags with 20 members
taking part in lovely walking weather with the
sun shining as we walked round.
We started from the top car park and went along a path to Gibson Mill which dates back to 1800. It closed near end of the 19th Century to reopen as the Weaving Shed café selling teas, coffees, mementos and ice cream.
We walked over the fast flowing Hebden Water and
turned right alongside the river flowing fast but
delightful as the numerous streams joined it.
We crossed the water and back again as we followed the designated path and finally back to the right hand side
as we climbed up through the woods to join the
main track back down to Gibson Mill for lunch .
After lunch we walked back down on the left hand side of Hebden Water as it flowed down into Hebden Bridge over the numerous rocks and finally back into the car park .
A great walk well organised by Pat and Tony
in great conditions .

24 took part in the July walk starting from the base at Albion Street with quite a few from the North side of Brighouse choosing to travel there by bus to facilitate
the finish at Hipperholme .
We walked on Waterloo Road to Thornhill Briggs and across the ford, took a left before the old railway viaduct and headed into Bailiff Bridge. We crossed Birkby Lane
on the old railway line into lower Wyke and down to
Victoria Road across the park and through the fields
into Leeds Road.
We crossed more fields and the bridge over the Halifax to Bradford railway line and into Norwood Green for lunch.
After lunch we went through a series of fields to Priestley Green and did a right turn up past Coley Hall to St John's Church Coley and a left turn saw us heading towards Hipperholme via a few more fields.
We had a refreshing stop at Kendall's ice cream café before a short walk to the bus stop at Hipperholme
and a short ride back to base .
The overall distance from Base to Kendalls gave a reading of 10.5 kilometres which reads as 6.524 miles.
An enjoyable walk in lovely conditions led by
Mike Halliwell with back marker Peter Edwards around part of the Brighouse boundary walk and Calderdale Way.

With holidays now in full swing there were just 16 for the June walk, on Thursday 20th, starting at the Crossroads pub on Mount Tabor led by Sue Bythell.
The sun shone all the time but a strong wind was there especially on the open stretches.
We went past Mount Pleasant cemetery and the church, now a residence, along Wainstalls Rd. past the school and down into Kell Butts before switching to the fields and a field full of Bulls, cows and calves, which luckily moved over for us. A long uphill stretch saw us go through 7 stiles and up to Hough Gate Farm and cottage with a long steady pull up to the Old Withens pub, now a house before turning left following the Calderdale Way and past Haighcote Barn, built 2000, before stopping for lunch and surprise, surprise a piece of birthday cake as Paul celebrated his birthday. We went then round the side of the 2 Cold Edge Reservoirs, sending a flock of Canadian Geese into the water complete with the goslings, it was certainly a wavy water across the reservoir. We backtracked down through some other fields before tracking back on the road to the Crossroads Inn, were a few took a little refreshments.
A good walk in pleasant conditions enjoyed by all and thanks to Sue

There were 28 walkers plus a dog on our May walk around Warley led by John and Jean Pickersgill.
From the Warley Town play ground car park we set off along Paradise Lane past the cricket field and school. Crossing Green Hill. We went down a grassy Lane Pigman Lane then through fields and a
kissing gate that delayed things.
Looking across the valley there was Sowerby church , and views of Boulderclough and Norland. The walk continued through fields and past houses with more views of Oats Mill at Booth, the Windmills on Ovenden Moor and the Kershaw Estate at Luddenden.
We progressed through Hollins Wood up the steep steps and stopped for a picnic lunch. We could see Stoodley Pike here and continued down Workhouse Lane past The Vandals rugby ground and the Cemetery back to the car park and a drink in the Maypole Inn.
Beautiful weather but cool wind but an
enjoyable walk of just over 4 miles.

Our April walk took 22 members and 1 dog to Flockton. After passing a lot of new builds we parked up Park Side quite appropriate. We crossed the main busy Barnsley road thanks to a courteous HGV driver and made our way on the south side of Flockton.
We went along Common Lane past Six Lanes end and up Crawshaw Lane and into Upper Crawshaw being passed by a cyclist for the second time.
Here we could look over to Barnsley road and
see the new developments.
Most of the route was along dirt tracks but presented no difficulty and we continued to Furnace Grange before we made the uphill trail back to the main Barnsley road.
We crossed over onto the pavement for 400 yards
before going into Flockton Green and a walk through
fields and a small wood before entering
Park Side from the top of the road.
Many thanks to Bill Robertson for organising the walk and Brian Thurlow for guiding us along the route.

Hebden Bridge on a sunny day!
A small group of 14 met who at Albion Street car park was supplemented by a further 16 at our Luddenden Foot starting point, plus our regular dog. Walking conditions were nice as we ventured on the canal bank on our March walk, quite dry after all the rain last weekend.
We went through Mytholmroyd where the debris could be seen along the adjacent riverbank, evidence of the high volume of water that had gone through.
We continued through Hebden Bridge for a further
10 minute to the Stubbings Wharf pub alongside
the canal bank and we all enjoyed a delightful
meal in the upstairs room.
Afterwards some chose to walk the 4 plus miles back to the cars whilst others took the bus outside the
pub into Luddenden Foot.

leader Brian Thurlow

The February walk was about 4 miles at Denby Dale. There were 33 participants and 1 dog on the walk around lower Denby off the Barnsley road with great weather for the walk. We had wonderful views at the summit of our walk with the 2 masts of Emley Moor to our left and
3 power stations visible over in the distant east.
The view all round at the top was breathtaking with no clouds to be seen. We covered part of both the Denby Dale Village trail and the Denby Dale Pie trail on a walk well led by Bill Robertson, before settling down for a pint and a meal at the White Hart pub in the middle of Denby Dale Village. A very enjoyable meal with the majority going for the famous Denby Dale Pie.

Our January 2019 walk was on a cold windy day.
29 walkers and 1 dog met at the Stump Cross Inn to start our walk. We ordered our meals from a big menu including a carvery and used their toilet facilities before setting off in an anti clockwise direction
up the Shibden Valley.
There was a strong cold wind but with everybody well wrapped up we got quite warm and even warmer when out of the wind. After the uphill section we had a nice downhill walk through The Shibden Mill Inn car park back to the main road and into a busy but quite efficient pub where everyone had a lovely meal either from the carvery or off the menu.
A good enjoyable walk well organised by our leader Brian, thank you.

It was a disappointing turnout today for our December walk with just 7 on a fine but cold walk.
After a bus ride to Slaithwaite we made our way down the Canal on our way into Huddersfield 7.8 kilometres away. The Canal drops considerably from Slaithwaite
with over 20 locks.
The walk was enjoyable at a nice pace with a heron on the river alongside us before we came into Huddersfield for a well deserved drink.

There were 35 members on the October walk organised by Chris and Jean Stewart in lovely walking conditions.
The walk started from Albion Street down into Brighouse, past the Parish Church over the canal and across the river bridge and onto Lillands Lane, where we walked up adjacent to the allotments and out into the Oaklands children's park area (renovated by Rastrick Plays Better with support from Rastrick Big Local).
We continued up alongside Rastrick High school before turning into Lillands wood with some wonderful views
over the Calder valley and Elland finally coming out at
the top side of William Henry Smith school and on
to Lower Edge before a walk up Church Lane,
through the "wilderness " to Upper Edge.
Our journey on the road took us past the Sun Inn, Round Hill and the 4 Sons, till we went via a couple of fields and over the motorway bridge to the top of Toothill Bank, before a downhill walk to our destination
The Junction Pub.
Sincere thanks to Chris and Jean for a very enjoyable walk with areas covered that were even new to Rastrick residents.

On Thursday the 20th September, with bad weather forecast, we surprisingly had 30 members on the walk in Harden, organised by John and Jean Pickersgill. We had 7 cars today on a walk that could only be described
as one of 2 halves.
We set off in lovely weather up through Harden Caravan park and into the beautiful woods around the area, with a stunning view of the Goit Stock waterfall, past an old entertainment centre that burnt down and has

We counted 27 in the car park, but 28 in the pub !!!
The route was wet but because the main route is hardcore etc there were just puddles to contend with.

Here is his summary of the day:-
"The walk on Thursday was attended by twenty hardy souls despite the doubtful weather and the competition of the England versus Wales football match. (I recorded the match and watched it as live because I avoided news of the result.)
The walk was 5 miles long. Starting from Lepton Church, down Thurgory Lane and on to Lascelles Hall Cricket Ground, then through Gawthorp to Houses Hill, Whitley Hall Farm and through Whitley Park back to Lepton.
Unfortunately due to the torrential downpours the paths became streams and at times we had to shelter under the trees.
We all managed to complete the walk successfully, with the exception of one gentleman who fell, and he and his wife took the shorter road route back from Houses Hill
We arrived back at the car park thoroughly saturated, stripped off our outer garments and returned home, where of course,
it had stopped raining.
I think most of us enjoyed the walk, despite the weather.
I hope summer starts before the next walk."
